Pre-Wembley training has given Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst food for thought

Town boss Paul Hurst says he is still open for players to stake a claim to impact Sunday’s mammoth League One play-off final.

Hurst revealed that some players caught the eye at a recent competitive training fixture between two teams of 11 at Montgomery Waters Meadow, where they are currently training in the build-up to Sunday’s showpiece at Wembley. The fixture, which was also officiated, also saw other players not impress the boss so much, Hurst admitted.

The Meadow chief said: “A couple caught my eye, a couple maybe weren’t as good.

“I’m not going to absolutely set it in stone because someone’s impressed – sometimes people impress more in training that you come to terms with. It’s not everything, but one or two caught the eye and we will be looking at that moving forward.

“Is that going to massively influence picking my team?

“Possibly not at this stage, but it might be something in terms of the bench or thinking ‘they’ve looked ever so sharp, I might give him an extra five or 10 minutes because he looks absolutely ready and flying’. So I’ll be ready to give them that opportunity.”

Midfielder Ben Godfrey added: “This is why I play football, to be involved in games like this.

“There’s a lot riding on it, and I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully we get the result.

“To experience two finals at Wembley is every boy’s dream, so I’m really thankful to the club.”
