Danny Coyne: Paul Hurst has been a revelation at Shrewsbury Town

Goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne believes Shrewsbury Town’s remarkable success this season epitomises manager Paul Hurst.

Welshman Coyne, who was in the caretaker role for 18 days between Micky Mellon’s departure and the appointment of Hurst, insists that the ex-Grimsby boss has everybody connected with Shrewsbury pulling in the same direction.

He added that Hurst has completely transformed the football club.

Former Wales international Coyne, in his first interview since his period in charge where Town lost four from four fixtures in October 2016, said: “It’s been an unbelievable season. Last time I spoke with you guys wasn’t happy memories for me.

“As soon as the gaffer took over it was a great day personally.

“But when you look at how he’s transformed the whole club, to be honest, how he’s got everybody together as a backroom staff – we all get on really well and are going in the same direction.

“We all want the same things and we’re all as passionate and hard-working as each other.”

Coyne, alongside No.2 Chris Doig, physio Chris Skitt, recruitment administrator Adam Henshall, fitness coach Marc Lindsey and sports therapist Aaron Lambley make up Hurst’s main backroom staff team.

And the former Grimsby, Tranmere and Burnley shot-stopper added that the ability within Town’s squad deserves more recognition, rather than being regarded as a side merely able to work hard.

“It shows on the pitch all season,” said Coyne, who has worked closely with Dean Henderson, Craig MacGillivray, Shaun Rowley and Cameron Gregory this season.

“It epitomises what the gaffer’s about, how he wants good characters in the club, hard-working, honest lads.

“But good players as well. Everyone keep saying ‘they work hard, they get stuck in and give 100 per cent’, but we’ve got some good players in there as well.

“We just need to give it a right go now in the play-offs and we’ll be doing everything that we can to get that promotion.

“What we do as a staff, team and squad, we all put a shift in and give everything. That’s what we’ve got to do and it can take you anywhere.”

Coyne said Town will be hoping to build more momentum going into the play-offs in their final regular game of the season.

Shrews, who drew 1-1 at Blackpool last weekend, welcome MK Dons to the Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday.

He said: “We want to put on a performance and try to give us that momentum going into the play-offs.”
