History beckons for super Shrewsbury Town

Boss Paul Hurst has urged his Shrewsbury players to make history at Northampton tonight by chalking up a sixth away win in a row.

Saturday’s win at Scunthorpe equalled the best run on the road in the club’s 68-year Football League history, achieved by the Division Three title-winning team of 1993/94.

Shrewsbury Town have previously won seven straight matches away from home twice, in the old Midland League across the 1946/47 and 1947/48 seasons, and in the old Birmingham League in 1929/30.

Town’s beaten opposition in 1947 included Notts County, Rotherham and Mansfield Reserves.

Hurst, whose side fell one game short of a club-record unbeaten start to the season when they went 15 games without tasting defeat, was not surprised to hear his side are on the cusp of a record.

“It doesn’t surprise me because it would be a hell of a feat – winning two is a good start and then to get to five.” Hurst said.

“It would be nice to write a bit of history, I suppose. Some of the results and performances in that run have been outstanding and it would be nice if we could add to that.

“Really achieving something, as in promotion and lifting trophies, is what you’re in the game for and the achievements people remember more.

“But for historians and fans, it would be nice to be part of the team that did that. Ultimately I view it as another game to try to win and accumulate more points.”

In contrast, tonight’s hosts Northampton have just one win in eight games.

Hurst is without injured Ben Godfrey (hamstring), who is understood to be sidelined for up to two weeks, while Dean Henderson will remain in goal before joining an England under-21 training camp.

James Bolton (ankle) is still absent. Hurst said: “He’s been out running. He kind of reminded me of my nan, who can’t walk and gets on a scooter – so he didn’t look too promising in truth.”
