Nathan Thomas, Shrewsbury Town’s midweek matchwinner, insists he’s enjoying life under Paul Hurst and assistant Chris Doig after helping Town return to the top of League One.

The exciting winger, on loan from Sheffield United, played a starring role in Town’s 2-1 victory at Fleetwood on Tuesday night, writes Stuart Dunn.

Thomas came off the bench to set up Shaun Whalley’s opener before grabbing a late winner, his first goal in blue and amber, as Town, a point clear of Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, reclaimed pole position.

Thomas has settled quickly at the Montgomery Waters Meadow since joining Town on deadline day and has been impressed with the club’s management team.

“They’re brilliant, they are really good,” he said. “They’ve got a real solid hard-working group of lads who will go to war for you and when you’ve got players like that and staff that will do anything for you it just breeds that winning mentality and the training sessions are really good.

“It shows on the pitch because we play some good football. Obviously, the pitches aren’t the greatest at this time of year. The one on Tuesday was maybe one of the better ones but it is hard

“The group have found a way to win games and that’s invaluable in this league.”

Thomas, 23, only started two matches for Sheffield United this season, scoring in cup ties against Walsall and Ipswich, so he feels he’s got plenty to offer in the closing months of the campaign.

He said: “Obviously, I was champing at the bit to get out and play some football again. At the minute I think I’m still running on a bit of adrenaline to get back on the pitches and get some minutes into my legs.

“Maybe where teams are starting to tire at this time of year, for me this is the start of my season.

“I’m only three games into the start of my season, so hopefully I’ll only get stronger as the games go on and peak at an important time of the year.”
