The winger joined Shrewsbury on-loan during deadline day, with Paul Hurst keen on bringing him to the Montgomery Waters Meadow since the last transfer window.

And after finally making the move to Shrewsbury, the 23-year-old was delighted to join the ranks.

"It was a while coming." Thomas told Shrewsbury Town's website.

"“It went down to the wire a little bit, but I’m over the moon to be here and I can’t wait to get started and get back in and around the team and playing football again.

"It’s been six months where I haven’t really featured that much for Sheffield United, so I’m looking forward to getting some games in.

“I had conversations with the Gaffer in the last window and I know when I was at Hartlepool he was interested then, so he's obviously monitored what I’ve been doing over the last couple of years and he’s one of them that I’ve always wanted to work with, so now I’ve finally for the chance to.

“I’ve obviously been a bit low on confidence this season from not playing that much football, so to be coming to a club that wants you and you know you have a chance of playing does you the world of good.”

Hurst was keen to add wingers to his squad over the January window, and Thomas fits that mould perfectly, although he had been played centrally on occasion.

However, he believes his directness and eye for long-range goals could help his new side as they continue to fight for promotion to the Championship.

"“I like to think I’m very direct and I like to get at people”, he said.

“I’ve been known to score a long range goal now and again. I will get at people, put the ball in the box and try and score goals.

"I think I scored against the Gaffer’s Grimsby Team, I chipped the ‘keeper, so it’s great when it comes off but you have to try it quite a few times before it does.

“For Sheffield United I’ve been playing in the number ten, but originally I was a wide man. I prefer it out wide, but the ten’s not that bad either because it gives you a bit of a free role, but predominantly I play out wide.”
