He becomes the second winger in at Montgomery Waters Meadow on a busy deadline day for boss Paul Hurst after Town sealed the signing of Abo Eisa from non-league Wealdstone.

Yorkshire-born wideman Thomas, 23, has been courted by Hurst for a number of months and almost signed on deadline day last summer. But Town were this time able to beat off competition for the signature.

There was initially interest in a permanent bid for the Blades man but the loan – until the end of the season – will make him the fifth loan player in Shrewsbury's squad, the maximum permitted on an EFL matchday.

Thomas has tasted just 16 minutes of Championship action after securing a £200,000 move from Hartlepool last summer. He netted nine league goals despite Hartlepool's relegation to the National League.

He has netted twice in just three outings for Chris Wilder's United, in the EFL Cup and FA Cup.
