Possible Shrewsbury fatigue factor is a worry for Paul Hurst

Shrewsbury chief Paul Hurst admits he faces a tough battle to prepare his tired players for Saturday's crunch League One clash with Doncaster.

Hurst described his players as looking 'out on their feet' after hosts West Ham required 120 minutes to secure an FA Cup third round replay victory on Tuesday night.

And Town now switch their focus to returning to winning ways in the league after losing at rivals Blackburn at Ewood Park last weekend.

With FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy action included, Hurst's small squad will have played nine games in the space of 27 days by the end of this month.

"I'm thinking about Saturday and what team is going to be best to put out because some of the lads were out on their feet tonight there, understandably so," said Hurst, who prides himself on having the fittest team in the third tier.

"We're a fit group but it's going to be a big ask on Saturday. We've got to somehow get the energy to go again in what's a big game against Doncaster."

While Hurst made three changes to his side for the London Stadium battle, the likes of Toto Nsiala, Mat Sadler, Abu Ogogo, Ben Godfrey and Jon Nolan have been ever-presents for Shrews across the packed schedule.

Hurst maintained in the FA Cup build-up that he had his mind on the 'bigger picture' and bigger game in Town's visit of Doncaster, who are six games unbeaten in the league.

Darren Ferguson's side now sit 12th but have a meaner defence than all but four of the division's top half sides.

"It will have taken it out of the players," added Hurst. "I'm sure David (Moyes) didn't want extra-time, when they put Noble and Arnautovic on he was hoping they'd get the job done.

"It'll be a massive ask. You're thinking if we lost to an 89th minute (at West Ham) then that'd be better for us but while we were in the tie we wanted to give our all.

"We had a long journey back, a late night and we look at the best route to recovery and asses the players today for putting on a good performance.

"That's one competition that we're out off, two left and the league is certainly all to play for with 20 games left."
