The 23-year-old spent the first half of this season on loan at Town's League One rivals Bradford, playing at left-back in the Bantams' 1-0 win at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

He signs an initial 18-month-contract with Town. It's understood that Burnley included a sell-on clause in the deal should Salop cash-in on the defender in the future.

Boss Paul Hurst had tried to secure a deal for Hendrie last summer.

Hendrie, a right-back by trade, has impressed Hurst with his ability to play on the opposite side of defence as well as in midfield.

Yorkshireman Hendrie spent time in the academies at Bradford, Manchester United and Derby before settling with Burnley. He trained for Town for the first time this morning.

"I was interested in him last summer but we couldn't get a deal finalised," said Hurst on Hendrie, who spent the entirety of last season at Kilmarnock.

"He was part of the team that beat us that day but he admits it was one of the toughest games he had.

"He can play right-back, left-back, and fit in midfield if asked. We've already seen this morning he's just an honest individual.

"He likes defending, impressed when up in Scotland and I think he'll be a good addition for us.

"I first picked up on him in Scotland. He was very well thought of. We've kept our eye on him and once contact was made it became clear he'd still be interested.

"I'm not looking at more defenders. More further up the pitch, we keep speaking about a wide player but I'd probably look for a couple of players if possible.

"I've got one more loan to play with and anything else would have to be permanent. Trust me the work fielding calls and finding availability is non-stop and will continue."
