Boss Paul Hurst disagrees with Shrewsbury man of the match award

Boss Paul Hurst was left in no doubt who should have taken home the man of the match bubbly as Town breezed beyond Morecambe in the FA Cup.

Winger Shaun Whalley, who scored created the opener and scored the second from the spot, took the gong from the matchday sponsors, as well as the Shropshire Star and local radio title but the manager was keen to get his opinion across.

Hurst felt that midfielder creator-in-chief Jon Nolan was by far and away Town's best player as his side reached the third round stage.

Nolan was felled for the penalty that was converted by Whalley shortly after Alex Rodman's strike.

"No he (Whalley) shouldn't have got man of the match, Jon Nolan was the best player by far on the pitch," Hurst insisted.

"He's done well, Shaun. Though penalties will always be a bit of a (goalscoring) debate. A lot of time people just see stats that don't say penalties, so he can get away with that.

"He tucked it away nicely. Bury wasn't the worst penalty at the world but it's judged for not going in, of course.

"It'll be good for him and his confidence. To get that and an assist today I can understand why he caught the eye.

"He did have some other good runs but I'd have thought I'd have given it to our midfield player."

Nolan, making his 23 appearance of the season – among the top in Town's charts this term – is already a firm fans' favourite at Montgomery Waters Meadow and lit the occasion up with some silky dribbling and accurate pacing.
