We must be at it from the off, warns Shrewsbury Town boss

Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst wants his side to be more switched on from the start as Town hunt an instant response.

His side have been praised for battling until the end this season, but Hurst wants to see a brighter start from his side after admitting they came out of the traps too slow in Tuesday's defeat at Bury.

Hurst said that his side must be better mentally ahead of kick-off. He added that Town are not a good enough squad to win games while not 100 per cent focused.

"We weren't mentally right in how we started the game (at Bury)," said the Montgomery Waters Meadow chief. "We had three or four lads that looked like they were really on it from the start.

"One of my old coaches had a saying, 'You can't turn the tap on and off, you've got to be ready'.

"That's unless you're extremely talented. No disrespect to them but I don't think we're in that category.

"So I think we all have to be really on it from the word go.

"If we are and we can get ourselves in front in the game, then you're really testing the opposition's mentality.

The boss explained that pre-game messages and set targets can influence players' mindset ahead of a game.

League One big-hitters Bradford, defeated finalists in last season's play-offs, are the visitors to the Meadow on Saturday.

Hurst said: "The way you speak to them and challenges you set comes into the mindset.

"I am a massive believer that a lot of it has to come from within as well."
