Shrewsbury’s flying start has come as no surprise to ever-present Toto Nsiala.

The popular Congolese centre-half has become a crucial figure at the heart of Paul Hurst’s defence since his January switch from Hartlepool.

Town are defying the odds in League One this season as they remain the only side still unbeaten and three points clear at the top.

But after a untarnished record against Championship sides in pre-season, boosted by physio Chris Skitt’s ramped up fitness regime, Nsiala had the inkling that something special lay ahead.

“No the start hasn’t really come as a surprise to me,” said Nsiala. “The way we started pre-season, the aim we had, the running and the gym work. It’s a whole different set-up, it’s going really well.”

Skitt took on extra strength and conditioning roles over the summer after former coach Andy Hodgen departed.

Nsiala said: “All the lads have bought into what Skitty and the lads behind the scenes are trying to do. It’s worked really well for us and we’re getting on with it.”

Nsiala also seeks regular guidance from Hurst’s No.2 Chris Doig, a former centre-half who made more than 200 league appearances for both Nottingham Forest and Northampton Town.

Town’s No.22 Nsiala has played every minute so far this season alongside Mat Sadler, and points to Doig’s input as having a big influence.

He added: “You will always have that bond with him as a centre-half, as you’ve played in the same position.

“He’s someone you can always pull aside no matter what the problem is. I have chats with him every week which really helps me keep concentrated and motivated.”

The pair played together three times for Grimsby under Hurst.

“I played with him. He is just a talker, he talks through the game,” added Nsiala. “He didn’t have the legs so I had to do his running!

“It’s natural he’s gone into management. He’s trying to pass on to me how to talk and be a leader.”
