Dave Edwards: Shrewsbury Town on the up

Dave Edwards firmly believes Shrewsbury have more than enough to climb League One this season – after coming out on the losing side on his Town homecoming.

The former blue and amber hero captained Championship side Wolves as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Wales international Edwards was impressed with what he saw from Paul Hurst’s new-look Town, playing the first 45 minutes in which the hosts didn’t afford Wolves a minute’s peace.

The midfielder said: “I was really impressed with how they played. They played a slightly different formation and it seemed to work well.

“They were getting the ball into the front boys really well and holding it up as well as looking dangerous when attacking.

“On the counter side of that, we weren’t great defensively and we need to improve that.

“I think Paul Hurst’s signings, hopefully, will bring a successful season away from the bottom and really consolidate this year.

“I think the players he’s brought in will be hungry to prove themselves and this level and it sounds like they have a really good dressing room.

“I really do think if they can start well and get all the fans at the Meadow behind the team then it can be a comfortable season and they can be looking mid-table up.”

Alex Rodman and Carlton Morris were on target in the opening half as Town beat a second Championship club in seven days.

Edwards reserved individual praise for new Shrewsbury recruit Jon Nolan, who won admiration from the home crowd for his ability on the ball and work-rate off it.

“I liked the boy in midfield Nolan,” added the Wolves man. “He looks like he has really nice feet.

“He got away from a few players, you think you had him under pressure and then he’ll nibble away from you.

“He looked impressive but all of the boys did well – they look like a real unit.”
