Micky Mellon: I was right to change it around
Micky Mellon has defended his changes after Shrewsbury Town crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Coventry on Saturday.
Town suffered their heaviest loss under the Scot as they went down to their second away defeat in a week.
The latest loss made it six goals against in the last two games and left them 19th in League One, level on points with four other teams.
Mellon responded to Tuesday's 3-2 reverse at Rochdale by recalling fit-again Jermaine Grandison and Liam Lawrence for in-form Mark Ellis and Jordan Clark as he switched from a 4-1-2-3 formation to 4-2-3-1 to match the Sky Blues.
But it backfired as goals from Adam Armstrong (2) and Marc-Antoine Fortune's penalty sentenced the Shrews to their biggest loss since April 21, 2014 when they lost 5-2 at Preston to go down from League One.
"You always think long and hard about those decisions, but we just thought that was the team to give us the best opportunity of giving a good account of ourselves," said the boss.
"If you'd had asked me before the game I believed that was the best side which would give us the best chance of winning.
"We changed the shape of the midfield a bit and felt we might need Jermaine's pace and power at the back."
Mellon made no excuses but felt his side didn't give themselves the best chance with their decision-making.
"Coventry are the best side we've faced this season," he said.
"You need to be strong defensively else they'll punish you, and with their quality up front, they did that."
Mellon made just the one substitution when Tyrone Barnett replaced father-to-be James Collins up front after 70 minutes.
And the Town chief admitted he didn't think he could change the outcome from the bench.
"It's always difficult when you're two or three goals down to think you have the answer on the bench," he added.
