Preview: Shrewsbury Town's Liam McAlinden wants to help boss celebrate in style

Striker Liam McAlinden is determined to help Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner celebrate 35 years in management by putting lowly Notts County to the sword at the Greenhous Meadow tomorrow.

The 20-year-old Wolves forward, who is on-loan at Town until January, was not even born when Turner kicked off his managerial career, the first of two successful spells at Shrewsbury, on November 21, 1978.

And he was less than a year old when Turner ended a hugely successful eight-year spell at Molineux more than 15 years later.

But the Cannock-based hitman grew up revering the name and respecting the reputation of the man that took Wolves from the brink of oblivion in the Fourth Division to promotion contenders for the Premier League.

And he admitted that the chance to help mark the 35th anniversary of Turner's first managerial appointment will add extra motivation to deliver against the Magpies tomorrow.

"It would be nice to give him a win to celebrate," he said. "Coming off the back of the result on Saturday (a 3-1 defeat to Port Vale) we need to get another win and with it being the weekend after his 35th anniversary it would be great if we could get him a result.

"He was a bit before my time at Wolves, but everyone knows about him there and 35 years in management is a massive achievement.

"You saw the reception he got when Wolves came here earlier in this season, it was great reception for him. It has always been the same.

"He's a legend and it's been great to work with him since coming to Shrewsbury on loan. I have learnt a lot since I have been here even in the short time amount of time. It's a great experience for me."

It is a chance that McAlinden has grabbed with both hands, having scored three times so far in six appearances since his loan began in early October.

Town's form has faltered in recent weeks, with three defeats in four games, but McAlinden is relishing his opportunity.

And he will be confident of adding to his impressive tally this weekend against League One's basement side, who have the joint second-worst defence in the division.

He said: "I would always target one goal every two games. That is what I am hoping to achieve here. These next two games against County and Oldham are very important. They are against teams around us and teams that are very beatable

"I played against Notts County for Wolves in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy earlier this season. They played their strongest team so I know what I will be up against and they are definitely beatable. Hopefully we can kick on and get the right result."

McAlinden has warned, though, that Town will have to make a better start to the game than they have in their last two matches, against Walsall in the FA Cup and Port Vale in the league.

"We just need to start the game a lot brighter," he said. "We wanted to give the gaffer a reaction last weekend, but didn't play very well in the first half.

"I think in the second half we played a lot better but didn't get the right result.

"It just seems we are not starting games very well."As soon as it goes right once I think it will click, but we need as many points as we can out of these next two games because we are only two points off the relegation zone.

"If we get an early goal I think we could go on and win the game. It is just about having confidence and getting a good start."
