Club record is Shrewsbury Town's target as Tranmere visit

Shrewsbury Town will have the chance to equal a long-lasting club record when they bid to topple early League One pace-setters Tranmere at the Greenhous Meadow tomorrow.

Town could extend their unbeaten home Football League run to 31 matches when the visit of Ronnie Moore's side concludes a testing first week of League One action.

That would match Shrewsbury's previous league best set between February 1978 and September 1979.

Their overall record of 33 home matches unbeaten is already the best in the club's history for all competitions.

But Town supremo Graham Turner has warned a tough examination lies ahead against a Tranmere side who have won both league matches to date and progressed in the Capital One Cup.

"Tranmere have had three good opening wins and I saw them at Chesterfield in the Cup," he said.

"They are very athletic, very well organised and have a fair degree of ability in different positions. If we fall below the standards we have set ourselves, we will pay a heavy price for it.

"Ask any player or manager and the first few matches of the season are always stressful occasions.

"I'm hoping with the win now, we can start to settle in and show what we can really do with the controlled passing."

With a clean bill of health, Turner is likely to name the same side that defeated Preston 1-0 in midweek.

And that would mean striker Terry Gornell making his first ever appearance against the club where he began his career.

"I was at Tranmere from when I was about 10 and became a professional there," said the 22-year-old, who was with Rovers before moving to Accrington in 2010. I think this is the first time I've been involved in a game against them and I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully we can build on Tuesday's win."

Meanwhile, Turner confirmed at a fans' forum last night that Shrewsbury will learn what fee they will receive from League One rivals Swindon for striker James Collins next month.

A tribunal had been set for last Monday but was delayed at the request of Swindon's legal team. It will be heard on September 17.
