He is better remembered for being a dependable left back during Shrewsbury Town's halcyon years of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

But some 30 years on from his last appearance at Gay Meadow, Carleton Leonard's connections with Shropshire football are far from over.

Leonard has made a surprise return to the county scene in a coaching role with Midland Alliance outfit Ellesmere Rangers, the club where his son Nathan is a midfield player.

The 52-year-old was in the dugout alongside manager Matt Burton for the first time in Monday's 2-0 home victory over Biddulph Victoria.

And six months after leaving Shrewsbury's Centre of Excellence, where he was responsible for the under- 16s, Leonard is delighted to be back involved in football.

"I have seen quite a few of Ellesmere's games and I know a lot of people involved with the club," revealed Leonard, who made more than 280 appearances for Shrewsbury Town between 1975 and 1983.

"I've always said that if there is any way I could help them out, I would be only too happy to.

"I spoke to Matt and he asked me if I fancied getting involved and I was delighted because I have missed football.

"I have got business commitments with a pub and a nightclub, but I'm sure I will be able to free up some time to help out.

"We will just see how it goes but it was pleasing to start with a win and you still get that buzz of being involved."

And Leonard is prepared for the prospect of working with his son.

"It's always a little bit tricky but, if anything, I'm his biggest critic and I'm sure that won't change," he added.

Burton is delighted to have Leonard on board as Ellesmere eye a top 10 finish in their first season at Alliance level following on from last season's West Midlands League premier division title success.

"It's great to have someone like Carleton to call upon for advice," added Burton.

"He will certainly get the respect of the lads."
