Steve Frisby quits AFC Bridgnorth with a blast at players

Steve Frisby has slammed the commitment of the AFC Bridgnorth squad after stepping down as boss.

Frisby’s decision to walk away comes in the wake of a 1-1 draw with West Midlands Premier basement boys Wellington Amateurs on Saturday.

His second spell in charge of the Crown Meadow side lasted just over two months and he leaves them 13th in the table. When asked why he chose to resign, Frisby said: “I had to really, I’d got that frustrated.

“Nobody really wanted to come to training and I think we’d took the team as far as we could. We took over at the wrong time, really.

“We played Wellington Amateurs on Saturday. I’m friends with the guys there but when the team at the bottom of the league is getting the better of you, that tells you something.

“We’re not fit and only four players wanted to come along to training. It’s a lack of interest from the players.”

Paul McMullen served as assistant to Frisby, as well as playing, and has also left the club. He is expected to go back to Market Drayton Town. Frisby took over in December as the board’s unanimous decision to replace Steve Broome and Jason Pike. His first spell at the helm ended in 2004.

“Things have changed a lot since the first time around,” said Frisby.

“I was there in 2004 and we had a budget, a good team and we finished third in the league. At the moment, though, there is not an incentive for players to come to Bridgnorth.”
