Non-League Day: Too early to focus on league position for Ellesmere Rangers

Ellesmere Rangers boss Richard Brown insists it is way too early to pay too much attention at the West Midlands League Premier table.

The Meresiders are fifth after 11 games and take on fourth-placed Malvern Town at Beech Grove tomorrow.

Brown is refusing to get caught up on all that, though, and said: “We have lost two and then won one from our last three games and, of course, we would have liked to have won all three of them.

“Going into this game, we know it is tight and I think they have played a couple of games less than us. I don’t generally look at what’s going on, though, in terms of the league table until after Christmas. It is too early yet to be looking at that.”

Ellesmere beat third-placed Tividale 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Liam Armstrong and Matt Hardiman got their goals before Elliott Hartley’s reply caused a nervy end to the affair.

Brown is looking to build on that triumph and added: “Malvern have got some good players, players that have been at a higher level, and it’s not going to be easy against them – it never is. “It’s just down to us to try to continue and build on the win against Tividale the other night, which I thought was a really good performance from all of the lads.”

Elsewhere in the league’s top tier, mid-table AFC Bridgnorth welcome seventh-placed Wednesfield.

After two league games without victory, Bridgnorth got back on track with a 4-1 win at Wellington Amateurs last weekend.

It is 15th against 16th as Dudley Sports welcome Shifnal Town. Despite a fine FA Vase result against Driotwich recently, Mark Wells’ Town are without a league win in three. Wellington Amateurs hope to put Wednesday’s 11-0 thrashing against untouchable leaders Wolverhampton Sporting behind them as they welcome Bewdley Town. Eighth-placed Bewdley enjoyed a 7-1 win of their own last time out. Amateurs remain without a win and bottom. In Division One, seventh-placed Allscott face a tough trip to Darlaston Town (1874), in fifth.

Wem Town and St Martins, fresh from their TJ Vickers Cup battle on Thursday, do battle at Wem.

Adam Proudlock’s fifth-placed Newport Town head to third-bottom Wyrley.
