It was a tough day in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase for the majority of Shropshire’s non-league teams.

Ellesmere Rangers are fifth in the West Midlands Premier League, but they were trounced 7-0 at home by mid-table Midland League Premier side Highgate United.

FC Oswestry Town have lost all seven of their Hallmark Security League games so far, and that poor form continued in the Vase, when they were hammered 5-0 at home by West Midlands Premier leaders Wolverhampton Sporting Community.

AFC Bridgnorth, who are seventh in that league, lost 4-1 to Chelmsley Town of Midland League Division One.

Midland League Premier side Shawbury United lost 4-2 at home to Wellington FC of the West Midlands Premier Division.

And St Martins, who play in West Midlands Division One, lost 3-1 at home to Ashby Ivanhoe of the East Midland Counties Football League.

In fact, apart from Whitchurch Alport, who won on penalties (see above), Wellington Amateurs are the only Shropshire side left in the competition after their goalless draw with Dudley Town.

Unlike Alport, the teams decided not to play penalties, and will now have a replay in Dudley on Wednesday night.

In West Midlands Division One, mid-table Telford Juniors beat Kington Town 2-1 and Newport Town moved up into fourth with a 2-0 win over Wyrley.

Wem Town swept aside winless Willenhall Town 3-0.

In Division Two, Ludlow drew 1-1 with AFC Bilbrook, and Broseley played out a goalless draw with AFC Wednesbury.

Market Drayton Town Reserves lost 1-0 at home to Wolverhampton United, Rock Rovers lost 4-0 to Sikh Hunters, and Church Stretton were hammered 7-1 by Wonder Vaults.

Bottom club Bridgnorth Development stayed rooted to the foot of the table after an 8-0 defeat to league-leaders Warstone Wanderers.
