Away victory is the perfect gift for Telford boss Gavin Cowan

AFC Telford United manager Gavin Cowan described his team’s 1-0 away win over Gloucester City as ‘the best Christmas present I could have had’.

The victory stretched Bucks’ unbeaten run to three games, with a bonus of a third clean sheet, and Cowan was delighted.

“I’m really proud of them, it was a real reflection of what we expect of them as a football club,” said Cowan. “We were difficult to play against, we created chances ourselves, getting behind them and stretching them, and I thought the lads were just excellent in every way.”

Gloucester lost 3-0 at Leamington on Boxing Day, and Cowan had been expecting a tough test.

“Gloucester released a statement saying they expected their players to be better and refunding the fans, and you’re always going to get a reaction from that,” added Cowan. “They were very good at times, but just couldn’t find a way through because we were just so resolute.”

With a third game in eight days, Cowan also had praise for his side’s focus and preparation.

“Aaron Lambley, our physio and strength and conditioning coach works meticulously and makes sure they have everything they need. As a part-time football club, they have to be responsible for their own fitness, and as you’ve seen in the last three games, they are certainly fit.”

“They showed character, there was game management, talking and organisation. It was a satisfying day for me; the players deserve all the credit.”
