Gavin Cowan urges AFC Telford to put bottom team to the sword

Boss Gavin Cowan has urged AFC Telford United to show no mercy and continue their scoring streak at rock bottom Nuneaton Borough.

The Bucks are heading to Liberty Way today (1pm) having netted seven times in their last two games.

One of those was a 3-1 victory against Nuneaton at home on Boxing Day, and the onus is on coming up with a similar showing to start the new year in impressive style.

“You have to be ruthless,” said Cowan, who played more than 100 games for Nuneaton across four spells.

“You have to go there and be ruthless against them, and not feel sorry for them.

“I have got a connection with the club so it’s difficult for me not to do that, but we have to go there and be professional.

“We have to put on a performance, similar to how we have done over the past two games.”

Telford’s 4-1 victory over Leamington at the New Bucks Head on Saturday saw them finish 2018 in the National League North play-off places.

One of the scorers in that triumph, Brendon Daniels, is due to have his loan from Port Vale expire after today’s match.

His contract at Vale is also due to end this month, so they could sign the wideman on a permanent basis.

The Bucks will also have to decide whether they want to extend fellow winger Yusifu Ceesay’s stay from Blackpool.

“We need to sit down and have a chat with them, obviously,” said Cowan.

“We need to see which way that it’s going to go.

“It’s about what we want, but it’s about what they want as well.

“We’ll sit down and have a chat with them and see where we go from there.”

And on if he might dip into the loan market again soon, Cowan added: “It depends.

“We try to a bit chameleon-like – adapt and change to the environment.

“It’s going to be a long season. There’s still just under half of the season to go.

“You’ve just got to hope the lads will be fit and we’ll have continuous options.”
