AFC Telford's fast start has whetted the appetite

Not many expected AFC Telford United to be unbeaten ahead of this long trip to Spennymoor Town.

The games against Southport, Kidderminster Harriers, Guiseley and Brackley Town all looked tough on paper.

And they proved pretty difficult, with the Bucks displaying a lot of grit – and ability – to pick up points.

Gavin Cowan’s side have two wins and two draws to their name so far, the victories coming at home and the stalemates on the road.

Many would take another point at Brewery Field but Cowan is very much determined to grab a first away triumph of the campaign.

The Telford chief is not one to settle for anything, he is always striving for more – and that can only be a good thing.

Him and his players genuinely believe they can go anywhere in the division and win.

And after three seasons toiling away at the wrong end of the table, such enthusiasm is really refreshing to see.

Of course, it is early days and things can change very quickly in this game we all know and love, but you cannot help being excited about what this team could achieve.

They beat Brackley, who won the FA Trophy last season and reached the play-off final, 2-1 on Tuesday night. If that result does not get you thinking of what might be, especially after the Saints easily won the previous two New Bucks Head clashes 3-1 and 6-0, it is hard to know what will.

Spennymoor almost made the play-offs last campaign and, having not won a game yet this term, will also be desperate to grab three points so it could well be a pulse-raising encounter.

The Bucks were 2-1 winners there last season, in April.

Marcus Dinanga and Ryan Giles got the goals on the day for Telford, who have no fresh injury worries after the Brackley victory.

Goalkeeper Max Bramley is back in contention after suffering a head injury at Kidderminster Harriers, which required 17 stitches. Summer recruit Sheridan Martinez has been between the sticks for the last two games and will be hoping to keep his place.

He saved a penalty, which he gave away, in the win over Brackley.

He made some top-drawer saves but had some shaky moments as well, and Cowan has called for ‘more equilibrium to his performances’.

“He did well. He did well in parts and was shaky in others. Shez, like the rest of us, is learning,” he said.

“What I would like is a bit of equilibrium to his performances.

“In spells I saw absolutely outstanding, almost world class stuff, but then schoolboy stuff.

“What I would like from him is to just be a solid National League North goalkeeper, for the here and now. That would suit me down to the ground. There’s no doubting Shez’s ability.

“He’s a phenomenal goalkeeper and if you watch him in training, he’s out of this world.

“That’s why he’s got his chance but you want him to be a bit more on a level.”

Steph Morley has missed the last three matches with a calf problem and is a doubt for this

one.

Adam Dawson, after chipping in with an assist on Tuesday, could be given his first Bucks start.
