Phil Trainer looking for Telford home comforts

New assistant boss Phil Trainer has called on fans to help make the New Bucks Head a tough place for teams to play at next season.

The former Bucks player, 36, hopes big crowds can create an atmosphere that will make it difficult for travelling teams.

He also wants Telford to target the top half of the table in what will be his and Gavin Cowan’s first year in charge.

Trainer said: “I think if we can get bums on seats then for teams coming here it will be very difficult for them.

“We are hoping to make that happen. The supporters are an important part of the club.”

Asked for his thoughts on next season, Trainer said: “We will look at the squad and assess who we are going to keep and who we are going to bring in.

“And then we will kick on from there but we want to be challenging at the right end of the table.”

Cowan and Trainer have begun their rebuild of the squad as they prepare for the 2018/19 campaign.

They have already made two signings by giving skipper Shane Sutton and Ross White new one-year deals.

But defenders Paul Bignot and Bob Harris have not been offered new contracts.

Right-back Bignot, 32, and left-back Harris, 30, featured under former boss Rob Edwards last season but won’t be part of their new plans.

Cowan, 36, a former Bucks skipper, said: “Both players brought much-needed experience in last year and as a club we can’t thank them enough for their work on the pitch but off it as well with them working well with some of our younger players.”

Cowan has also planned talks with chairman ‎Andy Pryce over the club going full-time.

Last season the club’s hierarchy and former boss Edwards were keen on the idea which would see Telford go from being semi-professional to professional.

Cowan would like to see the club operate ‘somewhere in the middle’ but has his own proposal to put across.
