Rob Edwards blasts 'criminal' Telford display

Boss Rob Edwards has criticised AFC Telford United for a 'criminal' display which resulted in losing 2-1 at home to Nuneaton Town.

The Bucks are still third bottom in National League North, three points from safety.

James Ferry and Luther Wildin got the goals for the visitors on a bitterly cold night at the New Bucks Head, either side of Amari Morgan-Smith finding the net.

"I thought we were outworked and outfought for the first 35 minutes of the game, which is criminal," said Edwards.

"We got ourselves back into the game and then looked like we were competing, just about. We got in at half-time having, somehow, managed to stay in the game.

"Although our goal did not come under siege too much, we were certainly second best in all departments.

"Second half was a bit of a nothing game, I thought. We didn't do enough to get ahead or back in it, and they scored a goal which was schoolboy stuff, really.

"Their right-back has gone through five or six people and stuck it in. From his point of view, it was excellent. From ours, it's really, really poor."

A small group of fans voiced their displeasure following the final whistle by chanting 'Edwards out'.

Telford have 12 games left to escape the drop, the next being at Alfreton Town on Saturday.

The Bucks chief was particularly disappointed with how his midfielders performed against Boro.

When asked if there is a soft underbelly to the midfield, Edwards said: "It did look like that as Nuneaton were certainly on top with second balls, they were more aggressive than us.

"What is frustrating is that we tried to make it clear to the lads to try to stop (Nuneaton captain, Ryan) Beswick running the game. That didn't work.

"We had to try make adjustments in the second half but, still, we didn't create enough and did not look like scoring. Not a good night, at all."

He added: "We talked a lot about having no fear, playing forward and running forward. We certainly didn't do that.

"I've watched their games and I told the lads, they will work and they will press. We didn't deal with it.

"We didn't do it, simple. That's why we didn't create enough towards the end."

And Edwards confirmed Niall Maher is off to another club after just one game for the Bucks. It is thought the 22-year-old defender is moving to a higher level.

“We’ve had a disappointing couple of days and Niall is probably leaving us for another club already,” said Edwards.

“That was disappointing as we had to make late adjustments to the team.”
