AFC Telford's Jordan Lussey says a lot has changed at former club Southport

There will not be many faces familiar to Jordan Lussey when he returns to Southport with AFC Telford United tomorrow.

Ex-Liverpool youngster Lussey has been a regular for the Bucks since arriving last summer, writes Joe Edwards.

He joined as a free agent, having left the Sandgrounders at the end of the 2016/17 campaign – following their relegation from the National League.

Going back to Haig Avenue, the 23-year-old midfielder insists he does not have the inside track on Kevin Davies’ side.

After all, he did not play under Davies.

The chairman has changed too, and the squad has been overhauled.

“It’s completely different there now, head to toe,” said Lussey.

“The chairman has changed, the manager has changed and the squad is all new.

“I won’t know anyone apart from a couple, really.

“I know that they’ve worked hard to bring on a lot of players and the philosophy will be different to when I was there.

“I haven’t got any inside information or anything like that – it’s just like playing any team.”

Lussey joined Southport shortly after being released by Bolton Wanderers. He made a good impression in his first few months but picked up an ankle injury on Boxing Day in 2016 – and did not feature for them again afterwards.

“I enjoyed my time at Southport. I signed for the club at a time when I needed first-team football, and they provided that,” said Lussey.

“Unfortunately, I missed the second half of the season through injury. I had an ankle tear on Boxing Day – two of the three ligaments.

“I had to wait a couple of months for surgery and didn’t play for them again. I’m really thankful for the opportunity they gave me there though.

“Now the focus is on going back there and getting three points.”

Telford could very well do with three points as they are second from bottom in National League North.

Their last league win was against Tamworth, on November 21.

Lussey feels recent performances have been good, but points are the be-all and end-all.

“It’s been like that for a long time, putting in plenty of effort,” he said.

“But we can’t accept plenty of effort and not coming away with any points. We’ve got some good fixtures coming up.

“I don’t think that confidence is low. We’ve always played some decent stuff, we’ve just had moments where we’ve switched off.

“We’ve been making more mistakes than the teams we’ve played – and we’ve been punished for them.

“It’s just just about tightening up at the back and making sure we’re clinical. We’ll get there.”

Southport are 15th in the table, with eight wins, eight draws and 12 losses. They have the second worst defensive record in the division, conceding 54 goals.

“Every game in this division is winnable, I’ve always said that,” added Lussey. “We go there believing that we can win the game, we’ve got some great players.”

Southport boosted their ranks with the loan signings of Accrington duo Mehki McLeod and Ross Sykes yesterday.
