Rob Edwards: Signings not the answer for AFC Telford

The Bucks boss is finding himself under increasing pressure after a run of just one win in 10 which has left his team just one point above the National League North drop zone.

Edwards would like to add more players of the same calibre as Ellis Deeney, who made his debut in Tuesday’s sobering 5-3 home defeat to York after joining from Tamworth.

But the financial reality at the New Bucks Head means he is unable to do so – while Edwards is adamant the players already at his disposal are good enough to dig the club out of trouble.

“We can’t have a merry-go-round and players coming in and out all the time,” he said.

“If you want to try and build something, have a project, you have to trust the ones you are working with day in, day out.

“It is not just so simple as get one out, get another one in. You always want to be as strong as you can but there are all sorts of things to think about, there are budgets to think about.

“There are players on contracts too. It’s not like we can just go out and say ‘we’ll have him, or him’.

“We are always looking but it is not easy halfway through the season. Most of the best players are not available.”

Deeney, who has signed an 18-month deal, was one of the few players to emerge with credit as the Bucks fell to a third straight defeat.

“He is a very good player and I was really pleased with his performance under difficult circumstances,” said Edwards.

“That is the calibre of player we want to bring in. Players who are very good at this level. I think he showed a lot of character and quality, particularly in the second half.”
