Jordan Lussey putting in the work for AFC Telford

Spending the majority of his free time in the gym after moving to the area, Jordan Lussey is intent on being a success at AFC Telford United.

The 23-year-old midfielder had a fine education in the game.

Progressing through the ranks at Liverpool, he trained alongside Reds legend Steven Gerrard – but things did not work out on Merseyside, despite captaining their under-18s.

He was released in the summer of 2015, and was hampered by injuries at next club Bolton Wanderers.

Lussey made a good start at Southport last season but a serious ankle injury halted his progress and he had a trial spell at Coventry City during the summer, before being snapped up by the Bucks.

“When I made the decision to sign for Telford, I did things properly,” said Lussey.

“I have moved to the area, to Newport – close to the ground for games and for training at Lilleshall and Compton, it is ideal.

“I have a lot of free time on my hands and I spend most of it in the gym to be fair.

“I have been working on a lot of different programmes, keeping in shape and looking to avoid injuries.”

Lussey has scored four goals in 14 appearances for Telford.

He is expected to start at FC United of Manchester tomorrow, with Jon Royle beginning a three-match suspension.

“I have found myself in and out of the team so far,” said Lussey.

“When I was on the bench, I had time to reflect on my performances and where I could improve.”

Lussey has scored in three of his last four games.

The scoring streak started against FC United in the FA Cup a few weeks ago, the Bucks winning 3-1, and then netted against North Ferriby United and Gainsborough Trinity.

A groin injury caused him to miss their last league game, a 1-1 draw with Southport, before coming off the bench in the 1-0 FA Cup loss to Hereford last weekend.

“I came in for a few games and got a few goals to help the team,” said Lussey.

“The timing of the groin injury was unfortunate but I am feeling good now and I just want to keep knuckling down.

"Back in my youth days, I always popped up with a few goals.

"One season, for the under-18s at Liverpool, I was second top scorer with 12 goals.

“I haven’t scored as much these past couple of years because of a few injuries that I have struggled with.

“I have got a figure in my head now, double figures is the aim.”

Lussey insists a few familiar faces helped him settle at the New Bucks Head.

“I knew Will Marsh from my time at Liverpool, Elliot Newby from Bolton and Ross White from Southport – so that helped,” he said.

“We all get on really well and the big thing is that there are no egos in the dressing room.”

Lussey is not taking FC United’s National League North position – second from bottom – for granted.

“Anyone can beat anyone in this league. We beat them in the Cup, a good result on paper, but we got two late goals and it was a tough game,” he said.

“We have got to go there with the right mentality.”
