AFC Telford boss Rob Edwards staying positive despite late leveller

Boss Rob Edwards is in a positive mood despite AFC Telford United conceding in added-on time to draw 1-1 with Southport.

The Bucks went ahead through Marcus Dinanga but Nathan Lowe replied from the penalty spot - after Ryan Wilson's handball in the box - for the visitors.

It was Telford's first draw in National League North this season.

"There was loads of good things, particularly the first half we controlled possession and dominated the game, created some chances," said Edwards.

"We had to show a bit more character in the second half and we were a threat, as we always are, on the counter-attack. There was lots of good elements."

On Southport's equaliser, which came after stand-in skipper Jon Royle slipped in the centre circle, Edwards said: "Obviously it deflates you. We were the beneficiaries of a late penalty (as they beat FC United of Manchester 3-1 in the FA Cup) a couple of weeks ago so we know how it feels to be on the other side.

"Of course it is disappointing, the circumstances - a slip in the middle of the pitch - were a little bit unlucky.

"You have to try to look at the positives and the performance as a whole though.

"The first half, we completely dominated - and that was great. We had to try to put them to the sword then, but we didn't.

"In the final couple minutes of the game, the lads were trying to manage it and keep it high up the pitch.

"Without the slip, I am sure we would have been able to see the game out."

The Yellows are managed by former Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies, who has overseen two draws since his appointment.

"Full credit to Southport as they kept going," Edwards added.

"They changed it in the second half, they had to, and then we had to adjust a little bit.

"It then calmed down and I thought we looked the more dangerous team.

"It's disappointing but we have picked up a point against a rejuvenated team. I wish Kevin well.

"Southport are not a bad team, they started the season well so we have to look at it as a point gained."
