AFC Telford boss Rob Edwards wants more after Bucks win

Rob Edwards wants his AFC Telford United to show more control, despite finishing pre-season off with a 4-1 win at Caernarfon Town.

The Bucks were on the right side of the handsome scoreline in North Wales, with trialists Will Marsh and James Thorne and attacker John Marsden, with two, on target.

But Edwards was not entirely convinced by his side’s display, describing it as ‘sloppy’ as the hosts passed up a number of their own opportunities in front of goal, not least a penalty saved by Sheridan Martinez, before they then dispatched a second spot-kick.

“The players worked hard but it was frustrating, we were a little bit sloppy,” said the Telford manager.

“It was similar to how I felt after Wolverhampton Sporting. It was nice to score a few goals and win but a bit frustrating because I think we’re better than that.

“We’re always going to want more. We’ll always strive and push for more, There are some good players in there and we want them to aim big and push themselves.

“We’ll keep pushing them. I won’t lose any sleep over winning a game 4-1 but I want more. I don’t want to be giving any chances away in an ideal world, I want to keep the ball better.”

The Bucks get their National League North campaign under way on Saturday with a trip to one of the league’s big boys York City.

Edwards was able to hand a first appearance to centre-forward Thorne, who netted the visitors’ second goal from the bench, with more or less his first touch.

The 21-year-old powerful forward is a product of Manchester City’s academy, he has also had spells with Macclesfield and Nottingham Forest.

Thorne has trained with the Bucks on a couple of occasions and took his goal at The Oval well.

Edwards and his staff will continue to monitor the forward as he goes about securing another two strikers for the upcoming season.

“I’ve seen James a couple of times in training now and that’s the first time I’ve seen him in a game,” added the boss.

“He’d be the first to admit he needs more games and whether we can give him that, we’ll see, we’ll have a think about that.

“It was good for him to get on the scoresheet, he’s a lovely, lovely lad and a good physical presence as well.

“He’s obviously one that we’re going to monitor.”
