The 28-year-old centre-half became a Buck this summer after several seasons as skipper for Welsh Premier club Newtown.

His no-nonsense approach and communication skills have stood out over their pre-season friendlies – the last one was today at Caernarfon.

As well as contributing heavily on the pitch, though, Sutton is looking to impress off it and said: "I think it's why they got me in as well, more so off the pitch than on it, looking after myself and leading by example.

"I think I can do that, especially as we have quite a young squad.

"For example, I was at Wolves Sporting an hour early and you have to lead by example, that's what a captain does.

"It's for the young ones to look up to. I'm only 28 but I think I'm one of the oldest in the squad."

Sutton came through Shrewsbury Town's youth set-up before spending almost a decade at Newtown.

He admits he was not a big talker as a youngster, but now takes pride in helping others.

"You've just got to organise the people in front of you. It makes your job easier," said Sutton.

"The more you talk the easier it is. It's something I've brought into my game over the last five years. I was fairly quiet as a teenager.

"It's experience, really, you know what to shout and when to shout it. It comes with playing football on a regular basis.

"I think I started 180 games in a row for Newtown. It's experience."

With the National League North season fast approaching, kicking-off with a trip to York City next Saturday, Sutton summed up his time as a Telford player so far.

He added: "I'm loving my time here. It's just getting used to playing different styles.

"The training has been top notch to be fair. It's improved my game already."

"I'm a club man. I like to be loyal to the club, stay around and get to know a few of the fans.

"The games I've already played at the New Bucks Head will stick with me forever to be honest. I'm looking forward to the season."
