Rob Edwards aiming to bolster his AFC Telford frontline

Boss Rob Edwards has assured AFC Telford United fans that bringing in 'one or two' strikers is a high priority.

The Bucks desperately struggled for goals last season – netting just 38 in 42 National League North games – and supporters have been calling for new arrivals to try and avoid it happening again.

At the moment, Matthew-Barnes Homer is the club's only recognised number nine.

John Marsden can play in that position but prefers to be in a deeper role.

Edwards is keen to add to his current crop before the new season starts with a trip to York City on August 5, and said: "It's an area that we are looking at – we are working on it.

"If you look at [the 0-0 draw with Hereford on] Saturday, we worked some decent openings but we just needed a little more help up there.

"I am confident in the group of players we have got here, and I do think they are capable of getting a good amount of goals for us.

"That being said, I have a few targets for that position and there are conversations taking place with those targets, daily.

"If we can acquire one or two of those targets, that would be great."

Shortly after becoming Telford boss, Edwards informed centre forwards Dan Westwood and Josh Amis – both signed by previous manager Rob Smith – they were not in his plans and allowed to move on.

Out-and-out strikers Lee Hughes and Dave Hibbert also left the Bucks earlier this summer, with the former becoming joint boss at Worcester City and the latter not handed fresh terms after a succession of injuries last term.

Meanwhile, Telford have their sixth of seven pre-season friendlies tonight as they take on Shrewsbury Town at the New Bucks Head (kick-off 7.45pm).

Town are expected to field a mixture of first-teamers and youngsters for the game as they played Championship side Cardiff City at the Montgomery Waters Meadow last night.

"I am sure it will be a good test for us," said Edwards

"It's another chance to keep getting the message across, and we will see an improvement as we go along.

"It is about fitness as well and I am looking forward to seeing how the lads do."
