Rob Edwards: Everyone a teacher at AFC Telford

Boss Rob Edwards says all at AFC Telford United have to 'teach each other and learn from each other' – and has promised to deliver purposeful football.

The 34-year-old former Wolves interim manager, from Madeley, will have been in charge for a fortnight tomorrow after taking over from Rob Smith and Larry Chambers.

He has overseen three training sessions and a pre-season friendly – a 4-0 win against Haughmond on Saturday – so far, and is now preparing his squad, which includes several trialists, for a friendly against Aston Villa at the New Bucks Head tomorrow (7.45pm).

Summing up his first couple of weeks in the role, Edwards said: "I am learning every day. I have got a lot to learn, and I don't just mean that because of where we are at and because it's a different level.

"I would be learning wherever, and the players have got to be the same.

"They have been receptive to the messages we have been trying to get across, the way we want to try and play.

"We all, together, have to teach each other and learn from each other. I think everyone has that open mindset."

On the football he wants his side playing, Edwards is searching for an attacking style, with wingers supplying plenty of crosses and strikers taking a lot of shots.

Telford were very much shot-shy last term, netting just 38 goals in 42 National League North games.

The Bucks chief added: "There are some good footballers here.

"We want to try to play a certain way, but I don't want people to get carried away – it is not going to be tippy-tappy.

"There has got to be a purpose to what we are doing. I want us to keep the ball, but I want us to get shots off, hit the target, and crosses into the box.

"I don't want to just play in our half or the opposition half, and not be going anywhere with the ball.

"There has to be a purpose and I saw that at times on Saturday – we got crosses in and had lots of shots, there were numbers in the box too.

"There were some good bits. We have to make sure we are controlling the middle of the pitch and stopping the opposition forming a counter-attack."
