New AFC Telford United general manager Sharon Bowyer admitted she is 'a bit overwhelmed but proud' after taking on the role.

The 44-year-old from Donnington has been secretary for 12 years and takes on her new post after the Bucks board decided against replacing Lee Carter as managing director.

Carter announced he was stepping down on May 13 but will continue in his current role to August.

"To find out as Ian Dosser mentioned everyone on the board was completely in favour was a bit overwhelming," said Bowyer.

Asked if she was proud, she added: "Yes, definitely. I've been here a long time and I haven't just been sat in the office doing paperwork. Perhaps people now think I know a bit more than I say I do!

"I've been doing a bit of Lee's role anyway by taking on a few extra bits over the last few months.

"It's a challenge as we're one body down, so we'll have to stick together – but we're a close team."

One of Bowyer's first tasks will be to represent the club at the National League AGM this coming weekend.

She admits following Carter, the driving force behind the reformed club, will be hard. "No-one can fill Lee's boots but he's taught me well over the years," she said.

"But I've got a lot of support from the other directors and they'll be doing a lot more, and Lee's remaining on the board so it's not as if I'm on my own.

"Lee has a list of primary roles for me but they all seem to be the most important thing, so I've got to prioritise the priorities!"

Bowyer is a single mother of three who successfully combines working full-time with being a mum.

"I've done a lot of coping," she said. "The kids have all had their various illnesses – two of them still have long-term issues.

"I've had a lot of support from the directors and the supporters."

The club are interviewing this week for a commercial manager to replace Mark Gallagher and have announced renewed partnerships with shirt sponsors Capgemini plus Pryce Builders.
