Long stay target for AFC Telford's Liam Watson

AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson today revealed he sees his future at the New Bucks Head as he looks to build a profitable future for the club.

The 43-year-old has never spent any less than two seasons at any of the previous teams he's managed in Runcorn, Southport and Burscough.

Watson spent a total of eight seasons at Southport, winning two Skrill Conference North titles and sustaining them in the Premier over a five-year second spell.

And the Telford chief is hoping to do something similar in Shropshire having made them champions for the first time since 1952, with the North title, during his first 12 months in charge.

He said: "We just need to concentrate on ourselves, give ourselves an identity in the new league and go about our business in the way that we can.

"I was at Southport for a long time and it would be nice to think I could spend the same amount of time at Telford."

Watson has spent this week finalising his summer transfer targets and is looking for potential, rather than big names, for his summer recruitment drive.

He's hoping to add to the club's turnover by unearthing gems that will prosper under his tutelage like Telford loan star Shaun Whalley, who he sold from Southport to Luton Town last year.

The manager said: "I think the big thing with Southport was the amount of players we moved on, that was always the way and we made a lot of money for the club.

"That would be one of the aims of the season, for me. I would like to nurture a player and then see them go and play in the Football League.

"It also makes it easy for ambitious players to come to the club. If they come here and work hard, it could get them to where they need to be."
