James O'Neill gets his chance with AFC Telford

AFC Telford United assistant boss Dominic Morley is hoping striker James O'Neill can match the work-rate he has shown during training in his first run out of pre-season.

The Bucks No 2 confirmed the teenage forward will be involved at some part for tomorrow's trip to Conwy Borough.

O'Neill, who successfully made the step up from youth to first-team last season, completed his final year with the Bucks under-18s in the spring.

But he has returned to the New Bucks Head in pre-season to push for a first team deal and Morley has been delighted with his efforts in a series of gruelling fitness sessions so far.

With substitutions limited to three per team in Telford's previous pre-season games – both Shropshire Senior Cup ties – O'Neill has yet to be given the chance to impress.

But Morley said: "He has been doing really well in training, he has worked very hard and now we need to look at what he can do on the pitch in a game.

"There is stiff competition up front, but it is always good to have a few youth players coming through. He will get his chance."

O'Neill is one of a handful of hopefuls who are aiming to win a contract at the New Bucks Head for the new Conference North season.

Winger Robbie Booth, and centre midfielder Martyn Jackson are also in the same position as is Nathan Rooney, who like O'Neill, was a member of last season's Telford squad.
