Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney completed their takeover of Wrexham in February when they invested £2million in the National League club.

The pair will be part of the new series, called 'Welcome to Wrexham', which is being produced by FX Entertainment.

The show will chronicle the takeover – the club announced their initial interest in investing in September 2020 – and follow the Red Dragons' fortunes over the following two seasons.

It continues the resurgence of interest in the club, which has endured a torrid time in recent years owing to major ownership and financial issues.

Announcing the plan on its website the North Wales club said: "As revealed by Rob and Ryan when they first met virtually with supporters in November, our new co-chairmen's takeover of the football club is being recorded by a documentary crew.

"And Nick Grad, president, original programming at FX Entertainment has confirmed the two-season order of a documentary exploring the club, the town, and Rob and Ryan's 'crash course in football club ownership'."

Grad added: "Rob McElhenney has been an all star on Team FX for years and now has partnered with the formidable Ryan Reynolds to bring glory to the 'Red Dragons' in the docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham.

"Rob and Ryan will take fans inside the sport as never before, pairing their genuine love for the game with the welcome challenge of building on the heritage of this club."

Welcome to Wrexham will be executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Nick Frenkel and John Henion.

The series is produced by Broadwalk Pictures and UK and world broadcasters will be announced in due course, the club said.

The pair also revealed the show with their own video posted on social media – delivered in their trademark style, featuring unimpressed Welsh translator 'Maxine', who provided her own interpretation of the Hollywood pair's announcement.

The skit includes Maxine, speaking in Welsh, saying: "There is no way these two can manage a football club and the one with the toupee thinks Wales is in Scotland."

Continuing in Welsh she describes the millionaire owners, who don't speak the language, saying: "The tall skinny one does movies and the muscular one sells cream cheese from Philadelphia."

Wrexham, currently sixth in the National League table, lost 1-0 to Notts County on Tuesday evening.
