The full-back, who was signed from Southampton for a reported £11million in 2019, has put pen to paper on fresh terms that will keep him at the club until 2025.

Targett has started every game for the Villans in the Premier League this season – with Dean Smith’s side having kept 14 clean sheets so far.

And the defender, who has won plenty of plaudits for his consistent performances, is now hoping to kick on once again and force his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans.

I want to get into the England squad – that was my personal target this year,” the 25-year-old said.

“I still believe I can do that. I just need to keep performing.

“I don’t think I am too far off.

“I just need to keep performing consistently and help the team as much as I can.”

Asked why he wanted to commit his future to Villa, Targett continued: “The club is progressing.

“There are a lot of changes taking place and it’s a really exciting time and an exciting project.

“I feel very settled here so to sign an extension, is really nice.”

Targett is seen by many fans as Villa’s most improved player this season.

“I think there were a lot of question marks over me leading into this season,” he added.

“I’m the first to admit that last season wasn’t my best season.

“Last summer I really had a look in the mirror – I wanted to be stronger both physically and mentally.

“This season has been my best season as a professional footballer.

“I’ve been consistent. I haven’t had any niggles that have kept me out of training and kept me out of games. Physically, I am in such a better place.”
