John Askey joked he was looking forward to his first Saturday shut-eye of the season after the relief of his first Shrewsbury Town win.

Town earned a comfortable 2-0 victory over Southend to end a run of 10 games in all competitions - and eight league attempts - without a win.

The win, courtesy of two first-half goals from Greg Docherty and Alex Gilliead, was the least Askey's men deserved after comfortably seeing out the victory against the lacklustre Shrimpers.

Askey had remained calm during his side's winless run but admitted he felt a wave of relief sweep over him after a firs three-point haul and hopefully an end to his sleepless nights.

"It'll be the first time I've slept for weeks, especially on a Saturday, I might not sleep, I'll be that excited!" Askey joked.

"It's nice for them to go home and have a pint and enjoy going into work on Monday morning.

“It has been a long time coming, hasn’t it. I was wondering when it was going to come and it’s relief as much as anything at the moment."

Docherty's goal came after just four minutes after super wing play from Alex Gilliead before Angol's sharp strike in first half added time.

“We started well and the goal came at a good time. There is still things we need to improve on, but what I was pleased about was the amount of chances that we had," the boss added.

“We could have scored more goals, having said that, we could have conceded. Today that little bit of luck came when we needed it, which can win you games.

“We are looking for people who can score goals and it happened for them today. I thought not only did they score; their overall play was really good."
