Foster, 29, who revealed he had been considering his future as skipper for a while, broke the news to the players after last weekend's final match of the season, a home win against West Bromwich Dartmouth.

No decision has yet been reached on a successor to the man who led Shrewsbury to two Birmingham League titles.

Foster, whose father John also successfully captained Shrewsbury, said: "I think it would be best for the team to have a fresh approach, fresh ideas. I've done it for four years, but sometimes it felt like I was saying the same things.

"I haven't done as well as I would have liked with the bat, so going forward it's time for someone new with fresh ideas to come in and have a different set of eyes on things really. Hopefully that will get the best out of the other lads and me."

Reflecting on his time as skipper, Foster said: "We've done well. Some of the players that have passed through the club in my four years as captain are probably as good as any that have played in Shrewsbury's history at times."
