Anthony Parker doubt on Shropshire captaincy

Shropshire captain Anthony Parker today revealed he's unlikely to be in a position to lead the county full-time.

The wicketkeeper, who plays his club cricket for Shrewsbury, appears to be only filling Richard Oliver's boots temporarily.

Parker is about to take up a new job as deputy head groundsman at Wolves, which he freely admitted will have to come first.

He could relinquish the captaincy after the Minor Counties Championship Western Division home game against Herefordshire.

Play entered day two today with a new-look side looking for their first win of the league campaign, after defeat to Wales earlier this month.

Parker said: "I have just got a new job and that's going to restrict my cricket. I am going to be deputy head groundsman over at Wolves.

"It's a difficult situation, I am starting within the next few weeks so we will have to see how it goes, I need to get stuck into the job.

"It's not just about the game, there's the training ground to work on and things like that. The players are back for pre-season this week.

"It all depends on how the committee and how they want to steady the ship. It's a shame for me, if I am not able to properly take it on."

Oswestry's Joe Carrasco, Quatt's Adrian Evans and Wolverhampton's Ross Aucott all made their bow for the county on day one yesterday.

Aucott made 3-36 with the ball in the first innings before Carrasco opened the second with 29, but Evans left for just one from 23 balls.

Parker said: "It's very much a transitional period for the county and it's about getting the mixture right, along with the experienced lads.

"There were three debutants yesterday and they did well. They showed some great promise. Ade went out to a decent ball.

"Ross came out and bowled a good spell, so it was an encouraging day for him. Joe opened the batting with a decent run, too.

"It was good to see those lads given their chance. We tend to be quite lucky in Shropshire, we do have a good youth system.

"The lads coming through are ready and it's encouraging to see them do well straight away."
