The Wellington club won the Molson Coors Mid Shropshire League’s main team knockout by beating Bylet in a thrilling final on Sir John Bayley No.1 by a mere seven shots.

They just about overcame a seven-shot handicap to pip their Bridgnorth rivals in a battle of sides packed with Premier League bowlers watched by a 100-plus crowd.

In fact Bylet – with Dan Davies winning 21-14 - were ahead until game No.9 when Jamie King won 21-12 to bring Bowring level, before man-of-the-match Martin Gaut won 21-13 in the 12th and last game to get them over the line.

Bowring skipper Rich Lawson said: “There was some brilliant bowling from both sides, a game played in the right spirit with plenty of noise from both sets of supporters but nothing over the top – the way the game should be played.

“Fortunately we managed to get over the line, but our opponents lost with real dignity. I know how they are feeling as we lost so narrowly to Newport in the semi-final of the County Cup by just two shots and yes it hurts.

His Bylet counterpart Scott Harries responded: “My boys will be back. We finally have a side competing at the top level, which our club deserves.”
