Another shot at success for Ifton

Ifton, having shrugged off their agonising County Cup final defeat, are getting ready for another shot at silverware.

The St Martins men are through to the semi-finals of the Premier League’s Alan Mayhew Trophy and tackle Meole Brace tomorrow night, writes Malcolm Fletcher.

Holders Meole will present another tough challenge for Ifton in the six home-six away KO, but they are eager to put a three-shot County Cup final loss to St Georges at Battlefield behind them.

They beat Wrockwardine Wood in the quarter-finals of the Barlows Fire & Security-sponsored Mayhew Trophy by 32 shots overall after winning their home leg by 39, Leighton Roberts and Nicky Jones their 21-3 stars.

Hanwood play Castlefields at home tonight and away tomorrow in the other semi with the final to follow on Saturday, September 9 (6.30pm start).

Meanwhile, Ludlow Castle will tonight aim to move a giant stride closer to a Tanners Shropshire League double.

They take on Pontesbury A in the semi-finals of the Tanner Cup at Meole Brace No.1 while Hanwood tackle Shropshire Cup winners Castlefields over the path on the No.2 green.

For Ludlow Castle, who include league Handicap winner Simon Lane in their ranks, are also locked in a thrilling Division One championship chase with Telepost, who they trail by eight points with a game in hand after picking up six points against the leaders in Shrewsbury on Friday.

Tonight is also quarter-finals time in the Market Drayton League’s Jim Swire and Bernard Lazarus doubles cups.

Ties, at neutral venues, are: Swire Cup – AWC v Bridgewater A at Chester Road ladies, Nantwich Park Rd A v Prees B at Ash, Joules A (MD) v Hodnet A at Con Club, District A v Ash A at Whixall.

Lazarus Cup – Chester Rd A v Prees E at Tilstock, Ash B v Hanmer C at Bridgewater big, Malpas A v Wollerton A at Prees small, Wem A v Chester Rd B at Malpas Sports.

n County Cup winners St Georges are through to the final of the Molson Coors Mid Shropshire League’s main team knockout.

They will take on Division One Wrockwardine Wood for the Harris Cup on Saturday, September 16.
