Emotional Emlyn Jones is a worthy winner

There was a tear in the eye and a quiver in the voice as Emlyn Jones received this year’s Shropshire Unsung Hero award, writes Malcolm Fletcher.

The Pontesbury stalwart was a fitting winner on the day his beloved club hosted the County Merit finals on its famous Nags Head green.

“Thank you so much this honour – it has made my day,” said the emotional 90-year-old after receiving it from county president and club-mate Mike Caddick.

“I had five nominations for Unsung Hero and I made my choice and then got others to have a look and they agreed with me,” explained Caddick.

“Emlyn was 90 this year and he’s president of Pontesbury and still greenkeeper of the Nags Head, coming here most days of the week, often at 6am.

“He’s bowled for Pontesbury for 55 years, 54 of them in the first team, and organised the Pontebury Open for many a year.

“You know as well as I do that he is the worthy recipient of this award.”
