Callum Wright is the king of Shropshire bowls for the second successive year.

The Castlefields ace produced a virtuoso display to retain his County Merit title at Bicton yesterday.

Wraight got his hands on the £300 first prize and the Charles Beddard Trophy courtesy of a 21-11 final victory over Andy Moss.

The 2009 All England champion was in line for an even more resounding success after storming into a 15-0 lead before Chester Road's Moss fought back to extend the final.

Wraight was in imperious form throughout the day, defeating Wrockwardine Wood's Stuart Rutter – the latest recruit to the Shropshire Crosfield Cup team – 21-8 in the semi-finals.

And he signalled his intention to successfully defend the crown he won at Wem Bowling Club 12 months ago by storming to a 21-5 victory over Martin Lloyd – the Merit winner at Bicton in 2010 – in the last eight.

Wraight becomes the first Shropshire bowler to defend the most prestigious title in county bowls since Peter Farmer reeled off three successive triumphs from 2005 to 2007.
