Shrewsbury's Iris Downes eyes global 800m success

Shrewsbury track starlet Iris Downes has been rewarded for her fine recent form with a maiden place at the showpiece World under-20 Championship.

Downes only turned 17 at the beginning of July, a few days after she recorded a stunning bronze medal at the European under-18s Championship is Israel.

Downes, who competes in the 800m, will jet out to South America at the end of this month to Cali, in Colombia, to battle with the cream of the globe’s under-20 athletes.

The Shrewsbury Athletic Club runner’s call to represent GB in Jerusalem this month was an early career highlight as she stormed through the heats before claiming bronze.
