Preview: AFC Telford United seek revenge on the road

AFC Telford United boss Kevin Wilkin is hoping to exact revenge on Leiston after his side suffered defeat at Victory Road last season.

The Bucks travelled to the Suffolk outfit for their first away game of last season, going down 2-1 in highly controversial fashion during their shaky start to the Southern Central Premier season.

It will be a much-changed Telford side that make the journey this season, and Wilkin is keen for his team to show how far they have come in the last 15 months.

“We got beat there early on last season, and I do expect a really tough game,” the Bucks boss said. “I’ve seen some highlights of their games, and on the face of it they’re a very capable side, and on their given day they’re even more than that.”

Wilkin added: “They were very unlucky not to take something from the game at Kettering last weekend, I think they conceded a late goal and Leiston had some good moments themselves too.

“That’s one obvious reason why, as we always do, we need to really respect what they’re about and take them very seriously.

“No game is ever easy away from home, but we’re off the back of a good result ourselves and hopefully we can build on that.

“We were really, really good in the first half and could have been out of sight.

“It wasn’t an afternoon where we could relax at any stage, but taking the three points from it was nice and it keeps us in the mix.”

Ahead of their meeting with the Blues, Kevin Wilkin was able to deliver positive news on the injury front.

“At training on Tuesday night Ellis (Myles) was the only omission injury-wise, and then there was a little bit of illness with Sam Whittall and Rhys Hilton,” he revealed. “Outside of that, and subject to everyone getting through the week, we’ll be in good shape come Saturday.

“We had a few trialists come in and work with us to a pretty decent level, so we’ll have another look at them to see whether anything can come from that.

“Alex Gudger had a bit of tightness in his groin, but by all accounts he’s come through OK, so hopefully he’ll be in the reckoning for Saturday’s game.”

There was also a pleasing update on the fitness of right-back Ellis Myles, who picked up a knee injury earlier this month.

“I would like to think, if things keep going the way they are with Ellis, he’ll be back in a couple of weeks,” Kevin Wilkin said. “He started joining in the running at training on Tuesday and has been doing his gym work better and better by the day, so hopefully he won’t be too far away.

“The three that trained with us are all ones we want to keep having a look at and see if they can progress us or not.”
