AFC Telford United ace urged to keep up his excellent form

Kevin Wilkin has challenged AFC Telford United top scorer Matty Stenson to maintain his good form and fitness ahead of the busy Christmas period.

Stenson, 30, has seven goals in nine league games for the Bucks this season, including six in his last five after Saturday’s brace against St Ives Town.

Two poachers finishes in that game gave Telford an all-important early lead, and Wilkin believes the former Nuneaton forward has plenty more to give.

“They key thing with Matty is keeping him fit,” he explained. “If you can keep him out there and playing regularly you’ve got a player that has proved time and time again that he’s capable of scoring goals at this level.

“That’s the aim with him, and it’s no coincidence that he’s had a good run of games now and has started finding the net on a more regular basis.”

Stenson’s second goal last weekend came from an inch-perfect Remi Walker corner, and the Telford boss admitted he was pleased to see his side make use of a set-piece situation.

“It would be fair to say they needed improvement, and we saw on Saturday that there was a real purpose with how we delivered those corners,” Wilkin said. “The balls into the box asked more questions, the runs in the box were better, on the whole, than the week before.

“We gave ourselves a good cushion, but the big thing is stopping any encouragement to the opposition, and we allowed them to score a goal with plenty of time left on the clock.”

“I was disappointed in myself afterwards in terms of our set up for their goal, because it came from our own attacking corner where they counter-attacked and scored a goal, and we can’t be that easy to score against.”
