Talented teenagers grab the headlines

Jack Finn and Ellie Vernon took the two major track and field honours at the Telford Athletic Club presentation evening.

The event was held at Harper Adams University and a total of 165 awards were handed out by club president John Bradley.

Vernon landed the best female track and field performance for her sixth-placed finish in the javelin at this year's English Schools Championships. Finn collected his award for finishing second in the English National Championships in the under-15 boys' 300m.

Claire Martin and Paul Ward won the best senior cross country performances for their victories at the British Masters Cross Country Championships.

Martin made it a double success by picking up one of the Bolard Trophies along with Jamie Davies for the best displays in the Sexarathon Race Series.

Fian Sweeney and Alex Burrows won the best junior cross country performances after finishing 18th at the English Schools Championships and 27th at the National Cross Country Championships respectively.

The club's fell runners of the year were Lucie Tait Harris and Duncan Birtwistle.

The Hartshorne Trophy was awarded to Nellie Sanders for all her work in organising the Sexarathon Race Series.

Jake Watson and Bethany Masefield won the best sportshall performances and John Bradley claimed the gong for indoor performance for finishing fourth in the European Over-70s pole vault championships in Poland.

The best International Performance went to Richard Rubenis, who grabbed fifth place in the World Masters 400m.

Jess Harvey and Daron Fincham took the prestigious Battery Trophies for the most consistent cross country runners over the season.

Rachel Coupe was delighted with her award for the most improved senior road and country senior runner, while Cameron-Ellie Mander and Caleb Adams took the junior version.

Eva Wade lifted the Sheila Norton Trophy for the best overall performance in the Shropshire Young Athletes Cross Country League.

The athletes of the year awards for track and field were awarded in the various event groupings for juniors. Sprinter - Lucy Asson and Jack Finn; Hurdler - Tabitha Newton French and Jake Watson; Distance runner - Cameron-Ellie Mander and Caleb Adams; Thrower - Ellie Vernon and Henry Owen; Jumper - Claire Richards and Krystof Danek; Combined Events - Sadie Craig.

The senior awards went to: Sprinter - Amy Bowen and Richard Rubenis; Hurdler - Jack Brothers; Middle distance - Sarah Mackness and Alex Burrows; Distance - Claire Martin and James Eggleston; Thrower - Kim Carter and Jamie Carter; Jumper - Danni Langdale and Andy Neat.
