Edge featured for the U's under-21s in pre-season and has now put pen to paper on a development contract with the club for the coming season.

A Welsh youth international, the 18-year-old joins after leaving Premier League side Everton in the summer at the end of his two-year scholarship.

Edge, originally from Park Hall, near Oswestry, had been with Stoke before spending two years at Everton prior to penning his scholarship deal.

A direct winger, he proved in pre-season that he will worry full-backs with his pace and crossing ability.

Edge has ventured south to make his way in League football and is keen to progress quickly having now signed up for the U's.

The former Marches School pupil said: "I'm made up to have signed for Colchester. Being released is a bit worrying for a young player, but now I've got something sorted, it's brilliant.

"A lot of young players get a chance at senior level here and I'm someone who is keen and hungry to get to the first-team level as soon as possible.

"I've been around the group for a month and there are some good players here."
