Bridgnorth Town are on the verge of completing one of Shropshire football's most unlikely signings - with a deal for former Wolves star Adam Proudlock.

The Midland Alliance side have confirmed they are in talks with Newport-based Proudlock, 29, who has been without a club since leaving Grimsby Town following their relegation to the Blue Square Bet Premier in May.

And Bridgnorth boss Lee Mills is confident a deal for the striker can be done in time for the Crown Meadow side's home clash with Loughborough University tomorrow.

He said: "We have been speaking to him and we have invited him down to the game on Saturday.

"We want to sign him and I think it would be good if he came down to us.

"We've been without a real target man up front and it will give him the chance to put himself in the shop window and try and get a trial somewhere.

"And I'm sure it will be a huge benefit to our younger payers just to play alongside him.

"He is a good player and were hopeful we can get him."

Bridgnorth assistant manager Tony Dinning is expected to speak to Proudlock today to tie up a deal, the pair having kept in touch since their Wolves days.

Mills added: "Tony knows him from Wolves when Adam was coming through as a young kid.

"I think Tony has literally bumped into him and asked him what he's doing and when he found out he was back in Newport and not doing anything we thought there was something we could do for each other."

Proudlock began his career with Wolves before moving to Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Stockport County among others.

He scored six goals in 46 appearances for Grimsby last season before his contract was cancelled by mutual consent, despite having 12 months still to run.
